In>Luce | Enlighten

Light has always been used as a mean either to direct or give warning. Many lighting languages can be understood globally, typical that of a traffic light or the beam of a lighthouse. Today, in the urban environment, many eye-catching buildings are illuminated at night and numerous architectural lighting systems allow the projected colour of structural/building facades to be changed. Various levels of communication can be developed using these lighting systems.

In Luce as a medium of communication gives more value as well as beauty to the illumination of public spaces. This extension of visibility and meaning is a transparent, clear, non-material system which delivers data (without the need to buy another tool), promotes community awareness and new, intelligent consumption practices. It opens a dialogue between citizens/consumption patterns and producer/distributor, in the pursuit of balance. It acts as a guide to using and saving energy consciously and reducing emissions.

Prototyping

In the End, the message had to be abstract, with the Minister of Bologna’s for Sport and Free time, noting possibilities of ‘Public Paranoia’ depending on the severity of the information. We had to soften the message so we Created a light hearted language, taking the form of the Natural Gas Molecule CH4.

Tour

The Project was recognized by Foundation EDF. I was Invited by EDF to present the project, we developed new scenarios, (flash version available here) as to what information could be embedded on the territory. In>luce was exhibited throughout France, Germany and Belgium. They Also Interviewed the team, which was played during the exhibition.

Scenario 1:
Consumption < Supply = lo cost = lo CO2

The project started in Bologna, we invented a scale using colour, and an extinct Gasometer, an Iconic Image gusting out of Hera’s HQ, visible for miles around, here we see ‘Blue’ meaning energy energy demand is low, therefore is cheap, and most probably cleaner… Turn it On!

PM 10 & CO2

We moved the concept to Rome, but not for Energy this time, but PM10 – pollution, not to create social unrest, we used art to filter the message – as minister was fearful of creating a sort of social paranio, these clouds break the severity of the message, change colour in relation to the Air quality… a scale from blue through to orange…

Dundalk, Ireland

Can we link the information to services, entertainment? this is a cinema in Dundalk Institute of technology University campus, Ireland… At times of low demand (especially during the summer, when the majority of students are on holiday), The energy created by the turbine is curtailed or put onto the grid with no feed-in charge. The Idea would be to offer free cinema to locals when this arises,,, lighting up the turbine – informs locals…
